Liable for council tax after move

Who was arguing with you? I was only making it clear to the op that yes they can apply for an exemption if the property is unfurnished however, there are no exemptions for empty properties that are furnished.
I'm not arguing, I'm just clarifying that I didn't have to actually apply for anything apart from clicking the right boxes on the council's change of address form.

I moved from one Horsham house to another 2 years ago with a 2 week overlap, I let them know in good time that I would only be living in one house and they sent out helpful information on applying for exemption so I only paid one lot of Council Tax.
If you let them know in good time rather than expect them to guess then it seems fine!0 -
My tenants have only ever paid for the period they have been residing in the property. Never any questions about length of tenancy etc (how would the council know anything about what you had agreed with your landlord?)0

Sorry? You mean we also have to pay whatever gas & electic theIf you have an ongoing tenancy then you are responsible for all the associated bills - irrespective of whether you live there, are away on holiday, or move out.
landlord uses when he shows peple around (or maybe he decides to do major refurbishments or whatever)? Those utilities always ask us when we are moving + final reading, never when our contract ends?0 -
The Council Tax charge is due until the end of the tenancy or someone else moves in to the property.
If the property is unfurnished then a maximum of 6 month Class C exemption can be claimed however if its furnished than a % charge will be (this varies depending on the council).
Most landlords will hold the person to the end of tenancy if they cant find another tenant straight away.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
How about ges, electric & water?
The utility companies ask us when we move (+ reading for gas&electric, ater is non-meter) not when the tenency ends.
Though I can imagine LL will not want to pay for it.0 -

The LL may cause work to be done while the place is empty so why should they not pay the utilities?Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0
