Unauthorised debit from credit card by RAC?

in Credit cards
Let me quickly explain my situation. I returned to live in New Zealand in August last year after living in the UK for a few years. During this time I was a member of RAC. I thought that I had cancelled my membership when I left the UK, but it appears that I didn't (doh). All of my mail to my previous UK address was forwarded to NZ - so I was supposed to get a renewal notice...but I never received one. Not realising that my membership was due in early Feb I did nothing and have been charged a full years fee even though I am not in the country.
However - because I signed up on-line for my original memberhip, RAC cannot provide me with evidence that I gave them authorisation to debit my credit card for my renewal.
Does anyone know if I have a leg to stand on in the fact that if RAC can't prove that I gave them permission to debit my credit card, then they have infact debited my card unlawfully and without my permission...and therefore should refund my membership fee.
Sorry its a bit long winded.
Cheers for any advice.

Don't see why the online sign up should be causing problems. Basically, you'll have t&cs somewhere that state what the renewal process is. Automatic renewals and therefore a continuous payment authority is probably the norm rather than the exception now, so I would hazard it is probably not unlawful.
But either you or the RAC need to find the t&cs to check.0 -
100% says auto renew online, as its a continues authority its upto you to cancel0
