Condensate Pump Leaking

Options
My boiler has a Grundfos Conlift Model 96115920 which pumps the condensate up, across and down - a distance of about 25ft into the stench pipe. It has worked well for several years. Now it appears to be leaking. There is a drip coming from the bottom of the unit. I tilted it slightly, and the motor started, and ran for a few seconds. The first foot of outlet pipe is clear tube. I can see that it is full of water. It always is, as the first direction of travel is straight up. The water doesn't seem dirty. Do you guys have any tips regarding this pump - what's the usual problem?
Thanks for helping

Has it been cleaned regularly? If not that would be a good start. Check the MIs for the "how to" instructions. If you don't have them they can be obtained from the Grundfos site.

  • Second question. How much condensate comes out of the boiler? I'm trying to figure out how big a bucket I need if I'm going to pull the pump out for a while. A bucket is going to last for hours, right?

6 - 7 litres a day on average. As its getting warmer why not just shut the thing down whilst you do the deed?

I've fitted loads of these pumps and as yet have had no problems with them.

Are you sure the leak is from the actual sump in it, rather than a connecting pipe?
  • Well, it seemed to fix itself. Since I tilted it and it fired up, it's been working fine. Nonetheless, I took it to bits and cleaned everything. Nothing seemed particularly dirty or clogged. Been running a couple of days since cleaning and no problems.
I suppose it is possible that the outlet was blocked somewhere down the line, and the drip came from water oozing out under pressure. That seems odd too though. It's all inside the house, and hasn't been cold enough to freeze. Again, the water seemed clean when I drained it out in order to clean the pump.
Hopefully this will just be a mystery, and not come back in the future.
    Thanks all for your help.

My condense pipe got frozen this winter. I bought a length of clear pipe and fed it from the Grundfos lift pump - round the airing cupboard and into a bucket. It put out about a cup of water per week, if that. It is only a temp measure as I will plumb it into the waste when I redo the bathroom. I may have a knackered system? but 6-7 litres a day seems an enormous amount.

A good make of condensing boiler when set up a running at optimum levels can produce 2-3 litres condensate per hour.

Most do not for various reasons, but the possibility exists.
