How much NCB do you think you have?

Just done a quote with Privilege, and automatically selected the maximum 9 years plus NCB. Since I've always paid for protected NCB, I assumed I'd have 20+ years.
When I called the prevoius insurance co for a NCB entitlement letter, they said OK, but it would be for 6 years!
It would seem when you take a policy out, your NCB defaults to the max number of years that the insurer gives discount on. Since this is usually 5 or 6 years, then it makes no difference, unless your new company gives discounts up to 9 years!!
Privilege suggested that I called the company up again and requested that the true figure is indicated on the letter. The increase in premium would be £20 (though its only £10 if I redo the online quote).
I decided to cancel the policy, rather than get involved in the detail, but it got me thinking that this look like a bait & switch tactic.
Most people would go through the process, only to find that their policy increases by 10%, 8 weeks later, when its too late to do anything about it.

In your situation I would simply ask the previous insurer to issue NCD proof with the correct information on it.0

Nightmare. What a hassle. Oh well, it's not the end of the world. Do you have Sky TV?0

I'm having similar trouble with new insurer and because I cancelled the old insurance they are being very tardy with info about my ncb entitlement. If I get angry enough I will cancel this insurance too. Does anyone know if one has the 30 days grace to cancel an insurance if it has been bought online. Or will the insurers charge me a colossal admin fee for cancelling? My sympathies are with you jsoap. Be interested to know how you get round this.0

Most insurers charge an admin fee whenever you cancel. Check your policy for your insurer's policy on this.
As far as the cooling off period is concerned, usually if you cancel within 14 days you are only charged for the days you have been on cover (plus admin charge if there is one).
Don't know of any that give you 30 days, but again check your policy.0 -
Well no you don't have 20 years no claims bonus - there's no such thing. 20 years without claim, yes - but that's not the same thing.
As you've found out, the maximum you can have is 5 or 6 or 9 years, and companies don't bother keeping (or at least supplying) information beyond their own maximum.0
