Claiming Money From Lapsed Accounts

We have been scratching around accounts no longer in use for funds.

I found an old Credit Union account and contacted them . Great there are some funds I can have by re-activating the account.

However, I remembered having three times what they say was deposited. They are trying to help as I explained I was short of funds. I gave the bank, branch, and approx. date so on a second check they have found some more but we are still over a thousand short.

I have been advised they moved bank years ago and "would not know where to start".

Does anyone know how long paying in records are kept. The bank insist they cannot help as it is not my account but the credit unions.

So you can remember paying in but have no record of it or of any withdrawals - no statement or passbook ??
  • NO just my account number and a smile. not great one for record keeping...(my rich and foolish way back days!). Its a long shot just collecting funds I've "mislaid" along the way.
It was linked to a job so payments were made direct from salary.
When I moved jobs they gave me their account number to pay direct.
My new job was near a branch of their bank so I was able to pinpoint which branch and limit the dates to when I worked in this particular job. On this basis they found some of the money which obviously I am grateful for.
  • records tend to be kept for a few years on hand
you could find some receipt to show the amount u paid in i hope ;)
  • Thanks
I am doing the legwork because they are busy and I am not exactly the ideal customer.
Just date and branch still looking for payslips.
The payments were identified because they were put on a "suspense" account by their bankers because of the missing reference number
