Help choosing 1st credit card

Hi,

My partner and I have had our offer accepted on our 1st home and have now decided its probably a good idea to own a credit card....just for emergencies and buying large household items with ie: sofa, washing machine, fridge freezer etc just for a bit of protection.
But I have NO IDEA whats a good deal as I dnt understand what I should be looking for :-s

If any1 could help it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

You'll be best off applying to your own bank in the first instance, as they will be able to see how you have managed your accounts. Your credit file will probably be too thin for anyone else other than the sub prime cards to consider you. Your next port of call would be aqua, vanquis etc.

If its your first card then approaching your own bank can usually the best place to go.

But if you have just put in an offer on a home and your mortgage has been accepted in principal it might be worth checking with the mortgage provider than applying for a credit card will not affect your mortgage going through (as you'll have an extra search on file and more credit available to you).

If your bank doesn't accept you, try these cards: http://www.moneysupermarket.com/credit-cards/credit-builder/

I would apply as soon as mortgage is 100% accepted as in, house paid for.
In the first instance try with own bank ie where wages go in and DDs go out. The bank can then see how you manage your account and can probably give you half a guarantee. What I mean by that is, they can give you an idea of limit aswell.

Try American Express, they give a 5% cash back for the first three months.

Coop are also a cash back card

If this is your first credit card or have a lack of history, both the above cards are difficult to get.

Thanks, I think I will wait until the mortgage is through and apply then as I don't want it to effect the sale of the house!
    Thanks everyone :) x
