My hairdresser warned against using the foam ones because she's had to rescue a few people who've turned out really patchy! I wouldn't recommend it for a first go, but for experienced DIY Dyers then i'm sure it would be good!:j0 -
I found with nice and easy that it always comes out a lot darker than it says on the box. So now I tend to go a shade lighter than i normally would! Has anyone else found this?0

My hairdresser told me it happens with most shades of brown and to always buy a shade lighter than you want to end up:j0 -

There's a voucher on the Grabbit Board for a free L'oreal Colour Mousse - same advice as for the Nice and Easy Foam - choose a shade lighter than you want as they are coming out slightly darker than advertised

I have a lot of greys. At least judging by my roots I have. I never leave a dye-job long enough to find out how bad it really is! Anyhow, I only use a semi-permanent. Either the Nice n Easy one or when it is on offer, Herbashine. The grey root coverage is good and I get a dry cut about every 5 weeks and then immediately go home and stick the colour on. Works well for me and my hair is in good condition. I do have a very short urchin-type hair cut so obviously I get a lot of the colour cut out each time.
I use a medium ash brown shade which come up quite dark at first. I wash my hair every day and after a few washes it does lighten somewhat.0 -

I don't home-dye I get mine done at the local college for £15.
But if I was to home dye, I would try that.
OP I wouldn't bother with a semi, they don't last long enough or cover well enough for greys.0 -

then go for the same colour in permanent. I like Nice n Easy as its easy to use and covers really well. do err on the lighter side as browns come up dark. Also remember that Golden means blonde tones- which can go a little brassy after a couple of weeks..Red tones can take over a bit too so worth sticking with cooler Ash or Natural ones til you get the hang of it.
Other tips are to use sunblock around your hair line to keep the colour from spreading around your hairline. I was also told to shampoo off the colour before using the conditioner.
Time it carefully according to your test- PLEASE dont scrimp on doing the skin patch test as hairdyes can cause some horrible reactions to some people..
Best advice here.
I always found Belle Colour Dark Ash blonde works best for a normal brunette shade on grey. Nice & Easy always seemed too messy for me. Anything but Ash shades turn auburn on me.
Have an old towel that you keep for hair dying. There's a voucher on the Grabbit Board for a free L'oreal Colour Mousse - same advice as for the Nice and Easy Foam - choose a shade lighter than you want as they are coming out slightly darker than advertised

Would say choose at least two shades lighter (mine is still dark brown on mostly grey hair). This doesn't seem to fade as fast as creme colourants but does need experience to get right.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Sorry Mrs E, but I can't agree with your last statement, I find a semi-permanent covers my grey very well and lasts me around 5 weeks. It does fade but then when I used a permanent colour, that faded as well. I admit to leaving the colour on quite a bit longer than the recommended time. Usually around 30-35 minutes.0
