Can anyone recommend a good hair dye? First time doing it myself at home...

Hi all,

I've finally decided to take the plunge, I can't stand seeing the grey hairs staring back at me in the mirror any more!

I used to have my hair coloured at the hairdressers but haven't done so for about 6 years now (I'm now 27). I have fairly dark brown hair, shoulder length, don't want to change the colour drastically just cover the greys!

Can anyone recommend a hair dye they've had good results with and is idiot proof? Always been a bit scared of the thought of colouring my hair at home!

Thanks x

  • I use a semi-permanent hair colour. It's Country Colours by Schwarzkopf.

It's very gentle & covers greys well. Also with it being a semi you are not stuck with it as it washes out over a period of time.

If your hair is dark brown, I'd recommend "Brazil". It's a loverly rich natural dark brown shade.

You can buy this make in Savers, Home Bargains, B & M also online.

I always get a good result using nice n easy whichever shade I have tried. Always do a strand test first so there are no surprises!

I use Nice and Easy because i've found it's not as messy as other home dyes - some are really watery and make such a mess!

My mum uses Garnier Nutrisse and it covers her grey well.

It will depend on your hair type which dye suits you best.

I would avoid Live XXL dyes if I were you though - they're quite harsh and messy, especially if you're doing it yourself at home! :)

My hairdresser once told me to pick a shade lighter than the colour I want my hair to be because browns tend to go darker than they're supposed to be and often end up looking black.

  • Loreal Casting Creme Gloss is a good start... that's what I used when I first started dying my hair.
    It is only semi-permanent though.

I've been using Nice + Easy for years, most times every 2-3 weeks as I hate to see my grey roots . A few hairdressers have said they like my shade - 103a a medium blonde - fair colour . Seemingly it's one of the most popular brands used . Never had any problems with it at all. Hope your hair turns out nice.

I always use a 10 minute one - either the loreal or clairol one, mostly becuase I am lazy and don't like to wait! Both are good and often on offer - I stock up when they are obviously;)

I usually use a root touch up kit in between as recommended by my hairdresser. Probably alternate the two and use approx every 5 weeks
  • I would definately start with a semi permanent- which ever is on special offer :p then go for the same colour in permanent. I like Nice n Easy as its easy to use and covers really well. do err on the lighter side as browns come up dark. Also remember that Golden means blonde tones- which can go a little brassy after a couple of weeks..Red tones can take over a bit too so worth sticking with cooler Ash or Natural ones til you get the hang of it.

Other tips are to use sunblock around your hair line to keep the colour from spreading around your hairline. I was also told to shampoo off the colour before using the conditioner.

Time it carefully according to your test- PLEASE dont scrimp on doing the skin patch test as hairdyes can cause some horrible reactions to some people..
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, its just possible you haven't grasped the situation ;)

also bear in mind where you apply the colour (location in house not on head ) as some colours will stain and you may find it tricky the first few attempts

(ive been doing it for years and sometimes still get the odd blob up the wall lol !)

I have tried many different hair dyes and I have liked the colours of many but I don't like the condition that they have left my hair in after! I have long brown hair and I use L'oreal Excellence Cream in permanent 6.54 Light Copper Mahogany. I don't have any grey hair yet tho, thankfully, but it says 100% grey coverage. Really easy to use too.

It has a 'protectant Pre-colour treatment' that you put on before the dye and it leaves my hair feeling lovely and soft and conditioned. So I stick with it.

Nice and Easy sounds good too though.

I also choose a shade lighter as they do come out darker on your hair.
