1&1 billing for renewal fees on unexpired domains?

A year ago I moved my 20 odd domains (mostly parked) to 1&1 from Fasthosts. Now realise they are both owned by the same folk.
I registered some with 1&1, before moving them to Fasthosts after having what I felt wasn't great service. Fasthosts turned out to be a nightmare to deal (constant email problems, security breaches, wanted to charge me for a resellers pack at hundreds of pounds for the ability to set up a dozen mailboxes).
From memory (although I may have this wrong) when I moved to Fasthosts, they added on the remaining time left on the registration, so the billing date was bumped forward. (i.e. if I had 3 months remaining, they gave me a year and 3 months before billing me again). Checked with 1&1 before moving, who seemingly confirmed this.
I've just been billed again for the domains I moved last February, even though some don't expire for another 10 months on a whois check. They claim this is down to Billing and Registration dates being different. It's taken three attempts at them explaining this though before I managed to get a full reply.
Is this how other hosts work regarding transfers?
