I think being a teacher has made me a bit of a stationery snob - lol or maybe because I'm a stationery snob I became a teacher!
Anyway... if I was having a guestbook then I think I would make sure I had more than one of the same type of pen just in case (the OCD in me would cry if say the first half of guests used a black biro, and the second half used a blue gel pen because the first pen had gotten lost. I think I'd do this even if I had one attached to the book itself.
If you want a pen attaching to the book, but not permanently how about using some ribbon - tie one end to the pen (easier if it's got a clip on it like an old styled parker pen), or perhaps glue it. And then with the other end of the ribbon make a loop big enough to slip the back cover of the book through. I dunno if that is described very well.0
