Car warranties and servicing

It's time for me to renew my car warranty.

However, my partner had a warranty with Tesco, and when it came to a claim being made they said that it was not valid as the car had not been serviced.

This has led me to think about my own situation, my car is 6 years old, and I have been taking a warranty out (luckily not needed to use it). However I do not get my car serviced (I changed the oil and fluids myself).

Is there a warranty company out there that will cover me as I don't want to hand over nearly £200 for a warranty that won't cover me.

Thanks in advance.

Why do you need a warranty, most will not cover wear and tear items, many exclude other parts.

It could well be more cost effective to put the money you spend on a warranty in to a savings account, then spend it as needed.

I have never purchased a car warranty, fortunately, like you I have never needed one, but I still have my money.

AFAIK ALL warranty companies insist that then vehicle is serviced by a VAT registered garage during the period of cover.
If you are a qualified mechanic and can provide receipts for the oil, filters, etc., you might be able to get them to relax that requirement, but personally I doubt it.

They are usually more flexible about the past service history, but - if it does not have an up to date service history when the cover starts, you are often required to have a service within a few weeks, including a cam belt change (if it should have had one but there is no evidence that it has been done).

If you look a post 92 from this thread it shows the terms from one I currently have (plus, on other posts, some other important factors to consider)

Yes, most warranty providers do stipulate that the car must be serviced according to the manufacterers requirements.

I've experienced Tesco Warranty (although don't think they do them anymore). In my opinion, this was one of the best ones as many aren't worth the paper they're on and try to riggle out a claim very easily. I had two claims with Tesco Warranty (one was for a substantial amount) and the procedure was very straightforward and hassle free - and they even paid main dealer rates!

One's worth looking at are Warrantywise and Warranty Direct - i've heard these two are supposidly good.

Thanks, looking back I think I had a warranty with Car Care Plan a while back. I'll have a look into it and have a think, but would prefer the peace of mind of having one.

    Cheers :)

Im looking for a replacement warranty as my was provided by Autoquake but they gone into admin. Lucky for me Ive paid for the warranty via my credit card so I cam claim the cost back via Section 75 CCA. Any recommendations on who so I go with? Im looking for peace of mind as well.

use the money you would be wasting on warranty to service your vehicle

If you don't service the vehicle and keep to the other conditions then a warranty is certainly a waste of money because you'll never be able to claim.

Like every piece of insurance, the provider has to charge enough to cover all the claims, credit card costs, admin and regulator costs and still have some profit left over. So: on average you're better off without a warranty.
You have to ask yourself the question: would you rather pay for a good warranty and have relative peace of mind, or keep the money and hope that nothing substantial goes wrong. Not surprisingly, lots of people have different views on that.

I rather pay for a good warranty and have relative peace of mind. However i tempted to go down the savings account route and put my refund in a savings account. The only claims I had was a cracked themostat housing and the garage replaced the entire thermostat. It would of cost me £140 to sort that out myself.
