Fear of being accused of fronting

Options
Hi all

I am the registered owner of my car. I pay for it with finance in my name. I pay the road tax and have insurance in my name with my fianc! as a named driver. I drive the care much more than her, but occasionally she does drives it (I would say no more than 20% of the declared milage). She is in her early 30s and older than me but has No NCD, I have 7 years.

My renewal is coming up at the end of the and looking around and seeing lots of warnings about “fronting”. Am I fronting? what coverage does a named driver actually get? Am I in a position where should there be an accident when she is driving the insurer could claim I am fronting.

I really think their should be guidelines to what constitutes a named driver. Really they should ask how many miles expected for main and named drivers.

I have had a look at getting her a policy to build NCD and to avoid this and for a couple of thousand miles per year and high excess Fully comp (cheaper more often than not that TPFT and TP) but the premium is about £500 and seems crazy to do for a few run-around trips per year.

Is there any way of protecting us against any future accusation of fronting?

Probably panicking about nothing, but better safe than sorry

Presumably this is your only vehicle of which you are the main driver - as your fiance drives it much less than you. This is not fronting.

Fronting is when a car insurance policy is taken out to deliberately mislead the insurer by claiming that the main driver is somebody else so that the premium charged is less.

Common scenario is when a 2nd car is purchased within a family for the teenagers to use, insured in mum or dad's name and mum or dad claim they are going to be the main user when they won't be. There is nothing to stop mum or dad insuring the vehicle, provided they disclose to insurers that the main user(s) will be the teenagers.

Insurers are now getting wise to this and in the event of a claim involving a young/inexperienced driver will make extensive enquiries to establish the main driver, if there is any suggestion of non-disclosure on the application form.

From the sounds of it you are being totally honest and up front so have nothing to fear. If you have not told us the whole truth then repost will all of the relevant details for another view.

This information is posted as a personal view and should not be taken as a definitive answer as all insurers will have their own criteria for assessing what they deem as fronting.

I also don't think you have anything to worry about (again with the caveat that I can only give a personal view).

If you were wrongly accused of fronting, you'd probably end up at the Financial Ombudsman Service. There's an example of a fronting case here (bottom of the page), which gives you some idea of the sort of things FOS would look at.

    cheers for personal views

yeah, as I say I would 20% use by her me 80%, I am the main but how can you prove that?

I just have the impression that insurance companies will do what ever they can to not pay out.

lets just hope no need to even consider it with a years safe driving.

I imagine your impression of insurance companies trying to avoid payment at all costs is formed by many of the posts on here.

Many of the posters have bought the cheapest cover available, possibly "overlooking" material facts (such as a claim or the fact they have not got any bonus) - and then come on here moaning that the insurers won't pay.

As long as you are honest and carefully read and respond accurately to what the proposal says, you should not have any worries.
