Car scrappage claim rejected

In September 2009 my wife traded her car for a new Nissan Micra under their scheme for cars over 8 years old.

She received a letter yesterday telling her that "her claim for scrappage had been rejected by the Government".

Later in the letter it asks her "to contact us to discuss how you can help us recover the money".

Now then - is she liable? The deal was offered to her 18 months ago by the dealer and accepted. At no time was there any mention of the scrappage not going through. And surely the scrappage scheme was an arrangement between dealers and the governement, not the consumer.

Any thoughts or advice would be most welcome.

    So what's the problem here?

Does the dealer still owe you money?
Does the dealer want some money from you?

In the first sentence you mention "under their scheme".
    The dealer's scrappage scheme?
    Nissan's scrappage scheme?
    Or the govt scheme?

Sounds like a scam to me, "contact us to discuss how you can help us recover the money". pah, They should be writing more information in the letter if its genuine.

Ignore for now unless someone else comes on here who has had similar. It's the first I have heard of it and the dealer would have been responsible for checking the car you were trading in met the criteria.

Does the letter have sufficient detail to be plausible, i.e.: correct name, address, details of both cars involved, dates etc?

How can someone help recover money when the same people have just said you don't have a valid claim???

    Smells strongly of kipper!

Sounds like a scam to me. There'll be an upfront administration charge at some point - £25 to recover the £2,000 you're owed.

The car to be traded in was too young for the govt. scheme therefoe it was traded in under Nissans own scheme so could not have been rejected by the administrators of the govt. scheme.

So I have to agree with th others.

Indeed, and although Nissan dressed it up as a " Scrappage Scheme " strictly speaking it wasn't, it was just a hyped up Part Exchange Deal.

So nothing whatsoever to do with the official scrappage scheme.

Sounds like a Scam to me as well.

The government don't ask people to "contact us to discuss how you can help us recover the money" they tell you what they want to to pay and how to pay it.
  • Thnaks for all the replies.

OK - a bit more info. The car was under 10 years old and was traded in under Nissan's version of "scrappage" as per posts by Hintza and Inactive.

The letter is from the dealer not the government.

Nobody owes us money but it seems that the Nissan dealer might think we owe them money!

Went to the Citizens Advice Bureau this morning and they say check the paperwork given to us at the time. They were amazed that this has come 18 months after the sale!

But has anybody come across this before?
  • NO NOT heared of this before why 18 months they should have told you before change of contract that your old car was not eligable for thier promotion at the time, not 18 months later and x amount of payments earlier. check your paper work and if it sates your part ex was taking in under thier scheme they have no gimpy leg to stand on.
