Eh? I'm not obsessed by creating a fine tilth....
I have a large area of garden that has been compacted by the previous owner's tons of pebbles on it. I want to seed it with grass, so I have to break it up and get some sand into it. I have been digging it and whapping the huge lumps with the fork, but am limited by my dodgy muscles, so the cultivator will be very useful to me.

Good spot! I wonder if this would be useful for us - we have an area about 30 foot by 15 foot that we did have the chickens free ranging in, but we are moving the chooks to a shiney new home in a different area of the garden and need to returf the area. It currently quite lumpy bumpy where the chickens have dug holes for dust baths, but it is completely free off weeds and well fertilized thanks to the chooks! Think it might take some of the back breaking labour out of turning it all over and levelling it!

Ok, I thought I'll update of how did it go.

I only manage to test the cultivator today. And I am so glad I bought it. We are building raised beds, and to put them in we have to dig out each corner to the height of the post to put in as the soil is very compacted, clay (honestly, we find patches of 'red' clay), and full of stones (guess builders thought they are being useful).

So, after we put the bed in today I decided we will give it a go. I broke up the compacted ground into big lumps with the fork, and OH tested the machine first. It went like through a butter! Any stones, we could hear the cultivator hitting them, and afterwards we just easily collected the biggest ones.

It does throw soi around a lot, so for the last 10cm or so of the bed I didn't use it. Besides, I was putting B&Q compost then, so I didn't need it anyway. But at lower levels, we mixed in different stuff. So, first we mixed in two bags of sand, and cultivator made it so easy to mix through with the existing soil. Then we add some more of our clay and a bag of B&Q soil improver. Piece of cake. All was nicely micxd thgouth in 5 minutes or so, when in the previous bed I had to go for half an hour to get it all evenly mixed and distributed.

No just need to get a long extension, as 10m cable is not long enough for me to reach everywhere I want in the garden. Will try and do that tomorrow.
