DLA for my 2 1/2 yr old daughter - liver transplant

I was wondering if anyone knew if my daughter is entitled to DLA?

She had a liver transplant in Sep 2009 - The reason i ask is because two other mothers at the hospital whos children also recieved liver transplants also recieve DLA and advised myself to claim, one mother recieved middle rate and one mother low rate,
So i applied August last yr and got refused,Was advised to appeal and have now appealed,
But are you entitled to DLA because of a transplant?
My daughter obviously is on anti rejection drugs and will be for the rest of her life and we have to be aware of infections

    Hi Angela

DLA is a benefit awarded for the care and mobility needs rather than the named illness or condition, i am surprised that a support worker didn't highlight DLA after the initial operation but that's in the past now, did you get help filling in the form, always adviseable and do get specialist support from a CAB or welfare rights org' in your area on your appeal.

Do you feel your child has extra care needs than a child of similar age, this tends to be the initial question to ask.

Qualifying conditions for DLA care component for children

In addition to the usual qualifying conditions for the DLA care component, in order to qualify for DLA care component, a child under 16 years must also show that either:-
    • her/his needs are substantially in excess of the normal requirements of children her/his age; or
    • s/he has substantial care, supervision or watching over needs which younger children in normal physical or mental health may also have but which children of her/his age and in normal physical and mental health would not have.
A client may be able to show that a child's need for attention or supervision is in excess of that normally required by comparing her/his situation with that of siblings. A statement of the child's educational needs may also be useful.

see this link for info' and the qualifying conditions:

    Good Luck
