Again that depends on the degree. With my first degree I barely needed anything like that thanks to the library. With my second and current I need a lot of expensive books, and a lot of expensive equipment in order to do the work required. And quite often they are a front-loaded expense so spreading the cost throughout the weeks is completely pointless unless Blackwells and Amazon are likely to let them pay in such a way.

Enlighten me on your 'second degree' here please? I'm talking about a regular academic undergraduate degree. I don't know of anyone studying who has to buy their own equipment.

£5pw is just a ballpark figure, what I'm trying to say is £250 per year is more than enough considering most have libraries. The library doesn't always have what you want.
Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”

Never met any arts students then? They can spend a fortune on supplies.

You must have a pretty good summer job, ELQ fees at the uni I'm heading to are £14,000 a year!

Not for my course. Even with the changes, everyone on my course pays the same, regardless of previous qualifications. The downside being that to become fully qualified it takes seven years in all and the majority do stay, whereas I'm leaving the minute I graduate. But I still have the option to go back and complete should I want to.

There are many courses where you have to buy your own equipment - art, architecture, design, interior design, fashion etc.
