New driver insurance questions

I've been looking at car insurance and I just wanted some advice.
Im a new driver and 31yrs old, I'm adding my father to the insurance as an additional driver and hes no claims or anything in the last 5 yrs.
Currently my cheapest insurance quote is £1200 (roughly) annually, the one I wanted to go with is £1400.
Does this sound about right for a first time driver as I've no idea what the average costs are.
Also.... I was on the Liverpool Victoria (LV) website and they ask for the car purchase date. The car was in my grandads ownership from 2004, I haven't bought it, but changed all ownership to myself so.....do I put the car purchase date as 2004 or 2011?
I spoke to someone on the chat facility who said 2011, but that altered the price by well over £400, the question: car purchase date is very general
Any advice would be appreciated as I'm getting really confused trying to find cover.

Without knowing where you live or the type of vehicle or cover you're after it would be quite difficult to say whether or not the price you have is "right".
Is there an info button which tells you how "purchase date" is defined?0
