We took ours to the vets (on a sunday - ouch!) and she had painkillers and antibiotics for it. Have it looked at, how do you think it would feel if it was you having ripped your toe nail off and then having to walk around barefoot. Is it still on? Our dog was in so much pain with it.0

They sometimes better off removed, so id def recommend taking him to the vets0

Many thanks to both of you for your replies. The nail is still there but looks fleshy on top in one place .Have phoned the vets this morning as he is still licking it like mad and is now holding it up with a sorry look on his face as if to say " mum it hurts" have an appointment for this afternoon so will come back after we have been and let you know what has happened.:DPaul Walker , in my dreams;)0

Good luck at the Vets. Lol we know that "look" very well here lol Just make sure you have a wee treat ready to help ease the pain .
Of course you will be in the dog house for the rest of the evening, that goes without saying x

You have done the right thing, it is worse when it is hanging off as it hurts them so much, the vet needs to snip it off. Ours did 2 nails, 2 days in a row. She uses that nail as her 'hooking claw' to get food off the kitchen sides so she must have been trying to grab something that was going nowhere!!0

Update. Have not long been back from the vets, they had a look and decided to clip the nail off, not an easy task when a 61/2 stone rottie thinks that they are going to hurt him;).They have cleaned it up and dressed it and he isnt lifting it up any more.He wouldnt let them look at it until the vet nurse came in that he likes. She has known him since he was 8 weeks old then they could have done what they wanted to him, he only had eyes for her;). So all is well now he is sunbathing in the lounge where the sun is streaming through the window with his paws protecting the bone I bought him with one eye open and the other firmly closed letting out a little snore every now and again.Paul Walker , in my dreams;)0

Out of curiosity, how much did that cost for a 6 1/2 stone Rottie?
My jack Russell was about £65 for all the antibiotics and consultation, etc.
At least they didn't have to knock him out for it, my mate's Bull terrier had to be.0 -
Glad to hear it went well. I laughed when reading your description of the 1 eye open to protect his bone. Of course the snore was for good measure I bet lol, they do know how to play it dont they. xRIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Hi it came to £36 in total, that included antibiotics for him they didn't weigh him this time but I weighed him when he was at the "beauty parlour" they didnt even ask about his weight come to think of it and the last time he was weighed was when he got his booster jab done.Paul Walker , in my dreams;)0 -
OMG £36.... mine cost £160 after the follow ups. Bloody hell, that is good. I have put an insurance claim in although one consolut was on a Sunday and just the consult was £90. You cannot let them suffer though can you?0
