The "Best" free anti virus

my twopenneth......FWIW..

1 avira - best detections, and lowest ping times. Used on "my" pc
2. avast - next best, slightly higher ping. used on my kid's lappys and any I fix, due to e-mail scanner included.

3. ???? don't rate any of the others. tested MSE and it's a resource hog and pings and scan times were horrendous. AVG is still carp, touch and bargepole spring to mind:)

This is after back-to-back testing on "my" pc, which I do when new versions of the top 2-3 come out, just so I'm not talking b0*****s and using a less optimal AV

Exactly the same as I do.
I did try MSE on a couple of machines, but found it didn't always update, at least not without a manual prod, scanning was also slow.
