Wedding Dresses

Yep, it's another post about wedding dresses but it's one which I would care for people's opinions.

My wedding date is 4th June 2012 and I have found THE dress already...

However it's nearly £1000 and that's without alterations :S

I have found it on ebay (it's a sample from the shop and they said they would let me buy it and dry clean it for me for a third of the price, so all I would need to pay for is alterations - any suggestions of people would be much appreciated!)

The problem is, I measured myself and it would fit across the bust and hips, although across the waist it would need to be 2 inches bigger than the approx measurements given.

The question is... Do I buy it (and try and lose two inches somehow-I'm dreadful at trying to lose weight, although I do have 15 months!) or do I just let it go and keep looking?

Many thanks for your replies and sorry it's another one about wedding dresses but I've been trying to think all day about what I should do :s

I personally wouldnt buy if you think the only way you will fit into it is to have to lose weight. Let it go IMO. x

Unless you were wanting to lose weight for your wedding, I'd agree with Pootleflump (love the name, by the way!), you have a long enough time to either find the same dress in the right size or discover another dress you love even more! x

I was told that the wedding dress that is meant for you will fit you perfectly and you won't need any alterations.

The one which I tried on in the shop did fit perfectly so maybe I should just keep a closer eye on that one in case the decide for sell that one.

Many thanks for your replies too :) (I'm dreadful at making up my mind without advice!)

  • Well on one hand you have 15 months to loose 2inches and get into the ebay dress

    OR

You have , lets say 5 months to find another dress, which a) will fit perfectly b) need no alterations and c) be the perfect price.

What ever you do decide you'll look beautiful!

Mine did :j except it's waaaay too long! But that is an issue with any floor length gown for me!

I'd keep on looking - especially if you can't return it. What make/style was the £1000 one? My dress was £530 brand new & is gorgeous (I obviously think that!) - but the first one I was going to buy was £895 & needed shortening and taking in. I saved over £400 all in all & got the perfect dress!

At least go to quite a few shops first - or have you done already??

  • Maybe get a dressmaker to make a copy of it for you to your measurements?

  • I would keep looking if you don't really want to lose any weight, plus if you lost weight around the waist you might lose it in the bust etc as well and then the dress would be too big there. You have plenty of time to find a similar dress that fits you perfectly.

Just realised it's you moosey :) My comment still stands and it means you can shop with me if you need to ;)
  • Would you consider getting a good quality corset? It will be expensive so might mess with your budget, but if you could find the funds (saved from not having to pay for alterations, for instance) a good steel-boned corset could easily cinch your waist in by a couple of inches. The good ones are apparently surprisingly comfortable to wear I've been told!

I have a corset for under my dress! Its fantastic and really does pull in the waist. However my dress is not boned at all so I needed it more for the support of boobage than anything. You may find if the dress is boned adding a corset will make it too strucutred for you to be comfortable. You can get waist cinchers which will just pull in the waist and may help.

I bought my dress in a size that was an inch too small on the wiast at the time of ordering. I am glad I did becuase I dont think it could have been altered down that much as have lost 1.5 stone since then and the shape would have all gone (since my dress has a beaded and embroidered overlay the alterations are not that simple).
