Once a month I go to London from Manchester, from the nearest point from where I am working...the best price I can get is £73.00 from Trainline.com...are there any better offers than this..? I usually travel on a Friday after 4.30 and get an open return..

Well thetrainline are rooking you - the same ticket can be bought from other websites or at the station on the day for £70. (Presumably the difference is their fees?)
You could save a bit without loss of flexibility by changing to London Midland Trains at Stoke on Trent - a ticket from Manchester to Stoke is £11 or £14 return and the off peak London Midland fare on to London is £33. But it is a rather slower journey.
And London Midland have reliability problems at the moment, particularly at weekends.0
