    Sorry to confuse you. Its complicating i know. Thank you all for your help. I've found out that the allowed savings was £6000 in 2008 too so even if they say that because my name is on the account the money is deemed to be mine, it still doesnt add up to that.

    If you or your partner are aged 60 or over you can have up to £6,000 capital before it affects your benefit entitlement
    Income of £1 for every £500 between £6,000 and £16,000 is taken into account when we work out entitlement to benefit

    Know the OP isnt a pensioner but just to say, (incase you wondered!) pensioners can now have £10k before it affects their benefit entitlement. since last year :D
