Wife just had a blow out on her Mini One Clubman.. called Mini assist who took her to Sytner Nottingham.

Wife calls me to say everything OK and that a like for like Continental will cost £108.00 Plus VAT.

I nearly choked...

Did a quick Google to see i could get them much cheaper so phoned Sytners and spoke to Mini Service to be told 'we subcontract all our tyre work out but you can speak to our tyre man'. So she puts me through to the guy who says 'yes thats the price'.... My reply was quiet, polite but firm and 'I'm sorry but i can get that tyre much cheaper'... Tyre guy says 'Sorry but it's on'... So I reply 'Then take it off....'. His reply 'ERM..... I'll do it for £95', my reply '£80.00 inc VAT and fitting or take it off'.... his reply '£85.00 all in'...'OK'.

Why do garages think it's OK to rip women off...?

Because women are naturally more trusting, as long as you smile at them and "seem" nice.

It's amazing how many rip off garages get recommended by my female friends, why? because they seemed nice.

It's really annoying and I strongly disapprove.... I posted recently about my neighbour being quoted some £90+ for a new battery on an old Escort, what they didn't realise was the car is a rare RS2000 and she's not your average dumb blonde :rotfl:

Hmm. Well main dealers will always charge a premium for items like tyres as they will add on a fair markup. But you did get recovered to them and by doing so agreed to have the work done. What did you expect Sytners to do when you got recovery off them?

Secondly, why didn't your wife (or the recovery company) just fit the spare so you could then drive on and shop around for a better deal?

    Such a dated stereotype.

We ran a price promise on tyres to not be beaten on price compared to ANY garage within a 5 mile radius. We no longer do that offer as it was actually abused, but we are still competitive with the local garages and check prices regularly.

There's no spare on a MINI.

I fail to see where the rip off is. You went to a main dealer/high street tyre chain rather than sorting it out on the internet first. More fool you.

I don't see the rip-off either, main dealers usually charge more, that's a fact. It's got nothing to do whether the cusomer is a woman or not. So you found a cheaper deal online, bully for you.

This situation is like anything, when you are cornered, you are charged more. Simply rule of life.

See how much you get quoted at ANY tyre fitters if you just walk in to them and ask for a price and then compare that with what you COULD get it for with a bit of knowledge and shopping around and haggling.

In this situation it would still have been £108 quoted if you'd have been the driver. The only difference is you'd have said, hang on, that's a bit steep. Trouble is your still a sitting duck and you were very lucky he negotiated.

If I was him running a business I'd have took it off and and let you sort it from there. Fact is your recovery company would not have dragged your car to another outfit as they'd fullfilled their obligation of recovering you to a suitable repairer. You'd be left driving it on a flat to someone else or would have to have given in and paid up - by which time the price would have gone up a tenner to take account of the time wasting!!

We had the same exerience, the car was pulling to the left, in warranty, so the main dealer tracked it, and tried to charge an hours labour, as it wasn't covered by the warranty.
My wife refused to pay, as £55 seemed a bit dear, (5 years ago).
She put them onto me, having phoned me on the mobile from reception.
I offered them £20 for the going rate for tracking then, they accepted immediately.

For future reference, *always* keep a spare tyre to hand. you don't have to keep it with you all the time, in the shed is fine.

Just get a compatible wheel and put on a tyre of the same size as you have on the rest of the car -- no need for it to be an alloy. You don't even need it to be a decent tyre -- this is one area where buying some cheap thing, or even a used tyre, is fine. My previous car had a remould as a spare -- it was a new tyre put on by the previous seller; I wasn't prepared to run on it permanently but it seemed a shame to throw it away and it was perfectly adequate for occasional use.

That way you can buy a replacement tyre at your leisure. Even if the car is recovered it should be possible to nip home, unless you're miles away.
