Insuring a borrowed car

Hello,

I'm moving house soon and my friend has offered to lend me his car for a few days, since I drive a Smart and will need to move more than a pair of slippers. :)

I aksed my car insurance company how much it would cost me to insure myself to drive his car for a few days, but they said that I should go via his insurance company. He's not happy about that because if I had an accident he'd lose his no claims.

It looks like I might need to go to a separate insurance company that will cover me just for a few days. Does anyone know if that's likely to work out well and if so, do you have any recommendations?

Cheers all!

You could try a comapny like this

    http://www.dayinsure.com/

Alternatively you could hire a car for a few days and avoid any potential bad feeling with your friend.
It could negatively impact your friendship eben if there is an accident that is not your fault.
Personally for about £100 I don't really think it's worth it.
Why not hire a van for a day and get it all done in one day.

    I just saw this one

    https://www.tempcover.com/default.aspx?ref=csis

linked through from the CSIS site

No idea about them at all though, if you do get a quote, post back and let us know if it was reasonable or not.

    Hey up,

Thank you for the advice and suggestions. I looked at quotes from both of those websites and they said £125 and £65 for three days cover. I will go with Temp Cover at that price. It works out about half the price of renting a van and seems worth it to me.

    Cheers for the help!

Why don't you give the £65 to your friend for helping you for the day and driving you about. That sounds fair to me and you'll get the job done in half the time at which point you can both go down the pub for a few deserved pints.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

    How much is the excess?
  • The excess on most of the short term ones is anything between £500 and £1000.

If you did the hip check / free 7-day cover you could just 'buy' the car from your mate then sell it back to tehm onec you have finished using it.

That assumes the mate can take the day off work and is willing to give up a days paid holiday.
I probably wouldn't be willing to give up a days holiday unless it was immediate family.
I have lent my car our before though (from memory I think the person was driving it on DOC).

Yes, but you will only have third party on someone else's car, not FC.
