Ceramic Tile Warehouse Refund policy

I'm in the middle of a large DIY project , part of which was tilling our new bathroom. I was advised by the guy doing the tiling (I'm hopeless at DIY) that we would need 100 tiles and 17 borders. Off me and the Mrs pop to the Ceramic Tile Warehouse , pick our tiles and pay for them with cash (£200).
1 week later , tiling has finished and only really needed 80 tiles ,and 16 borders so we have a full box of tiles and 1 border to return. I toddle along to the branch again and hand over the goods with my receipt , expecting a refund of £24. I was then informed the refund would be issued from head office by way of a cheque . I asked how long that would take , and was told up to 2 weeks. "No" i said it will be 2 weeks plus another for the cheque to clear. "Thats our returns policy ,we can't changed it" says the pimply faced youth over the counter.
So let me get this right, I pay cash for an item , no longer need the item (surplus to requirements) , take it back for a refund and have to wait up to 3weeks for my money , and let's be honest £24 isn't exactly going to bleed their cash register dry now is it.

When i took my unwanted tiles back they deducted 20% from the refund for a "handling" charge.Begs the question, what was so difficult about putting a couple of boxes back into stock and refunding the cost? But as there is a sign up,you have no redress.
Worse still my mum had some left over and they refused to take them back at all.So waiting for a cheque for the full amount would be welcome for her .Being a pensioner and having to pay out for an expensive job in the first place she could well do without losing out cos her stupid tiler over estimated.0 -
At least the company is refunding. They have no obligation to do so. You have to see it from the business's point of view. They order goods, they pay their suppliers, they sell the goods, they bank the money and they pay their staff. Then back come the customers and say we've changed our mind we don't want the goods. Now what is the business to do? Ask the member of staff who served you to give back his/her wages and if they don't agree ask the supplier to take the goods back and refund.
In future always ask before buying what a company's refund policy is. You only have rights under the Sale of Goods act if goods are faulty, not as described etc.
Major companies can usually afford a generous refund policy as they are able to turn goods around quickly. Smaller traders cannot usually afford to do this.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
