Shares Left To Me

Options
I have been left Shares by my uncle and I don't have a clue as to what they are worth or how to sell them. What will I need to deal with these shares as they have his name on them?
There are 100 shares in Rolls Royce Holdings from 1973; 82 shares in ICI Limited from 1976; BICC Limited is another with 15 shares from 1981 and lastly 1,191 in a company formerly known as Whatling Limited, but now I beleive it's a plc. These shares were purchased in 1976.
Can anyone please advise, I just want to sell them, as I do not trade or want to trade, in Shares!
Thank you.

PS Great site!

Your uncle seems to have held those shares for a very long time1

Its quite possible that you now own shares in more companies than you realise as some companies such as ICI have 'split' over the years and given shares in one of its former subsidiary's to its shareholders (instead of selling it to someone else)

To identify what shares you own (and how many) you need to contact the Share Registrars of the companies concerned. Hopefully those details are on the share certificates but if not:

    For ICI:

    Lloyds TSB Registrars,
    The Causeway, Worthing,
    West Sussex BN99 6DA

    Tel: +44 (0) 870 600 3993

    and for Rolls Royce:

    Computershare Investor Services PLC
    PO Box 82
    The Pavilions
    Bridgwater Road
    Bristol BS99 7NH
    General helpline: 0870 702 0111

They will be able to tell you what you now own.

These two companies are also the two biggest share registrars in the UK, so you can also ask them about the other two companies whose shares you have.

    Regards

I believe bicc is now balfour beatty. Registrar computershare
  • possibly the BICC Limited you refer to:

    http://www.competition-commission.org.uk/rep_pub/reports/1976_1979/fulltext/116c02.pdf

namely Balfour Beatty today (+ other sales proceeds relating to the groups disposal of cable interests)

    http://www.balfourbeatty.com/bbeatty/media/pr/2000/2000-05-10a/

In which Computershare as above is the correct contact - don't know about Whatling Limited though!
  • Any further help or suggestions please? What do I need to prove these shares are now mine? I do not have a copy of the will as my auntie died recently and I never bothered looking at my uncles will!

You will need to get them transferred to your name before you can sell them, and will need to wait for probate to be granted before you are able to do this.
  • The Executors of your Uncle's will should have sorted this out after he died.
If he died intestate then a Grant of Representation may be required before anything can be done with the shares.
You can't be just left shares if they still have your uncle's name on them and if he did die intestate they now form part of his next of kin ie your aunt.
As she has now died as well this could get messy!
Do you have any proof that they were left to you?

Do you know who the executors (if any) are?

No, I don't have any proof, this is my problem. All his paperwork has been left to me, along with small items like his fob watch, etc; but there is nothing to say the shares are mine.
My auntie, before she died, gave them to me saying that he wanted me to have them. Not knowing about Shares I thought I could just sell them!
    Oooops!
Thank you for your advice and help.

I have no idea! He was the first family member I had ever lost, and it was all done through my auntie, I presume. I know nothing about will's and probate, executors etc etc - or Shares!
Your help is appreciated though - any other suggestions? Are the Shares worth chasing? There are lots and lots more Shares in other companies, but I don't have the certificates, only information, such as dividends paid etc.

Guess who is just about to start learning something about it? :)

And 'Yes'. The shares are worth 'a few quid'. Not quite £38.5m but 'a few quid' nevertheless.

Fee earning professionals might possibly be required eventually, or maybe not at all, but let's see what people have to say on here first, eh?
