Don't have all the details as the woman wasn't sure but she tells me that when she starts her computer she is able to sign in and after that the screen goes black and she can't do anything else. As far as i can determine from her operating system is vista.
Anyone any ideas?

  • I'd suggest booting into Safe Mode and checking to see if the graphics drivers are working correctly.

Best I can think of without more details!

Are you a computer engineer? It's not necessarily F8.

If she presses CTRL+ALT+DEL can she bring up task manager?

If so, goto FILE and NEW TASK and type 'explorer.exe' to hopefully bring the desktop up

  • What is the make/model of the pc? You should be able to google the details to find the key to press to get into Safe Mode. It is usually F8 IIRC.

Once you are in Safe Mode, check the device manager (under Control Panel) and check for any yellow exclamation marks that could indicate a problem. If there is a problem with drivers (graphics or otherwise) then you can right click the item in device manager and 'update drivers'. Either that, or you can download up to date drivers from the manufacturers website once you've found details of the graphics card (from device manager).
