By long pole do you in fact mean monster truck?

Errrr... Yes. Sorry, I got mixed up. I meant to say that I used a spike, rope and a monster truck.

    I have another idea

Disclaimer : do not actually try this.

You should bolt a rope to the remains of the post. Find a comicly oversized pickup truck to tie to the other end of the rope one like this would do

Then film it as the back axel of the truck falls off or your whole house falls down either way the post stump stays in place.

Remember I am not actually saying you should do this but you should do this.

You'll never get anywhere with that.

    You need this.

You probably need both. One to pull the post out and one to fill the hole after. Might want to check your street isn't tight for turning might you. These things aren't known for their tight turning circle!

Just remember when you chose between

    1. Drill and elbowgrease (only 2.76 a tub at Aldi just now)
    2. Spike, rope and pole
    3. SPIKE, MONSTER TRUCK, AND ROPE

    The wise words of Ebe
I think Dave's approach is probably best.

Now he might mean that my idea about the drill was best but we all know he didn't mean that.

So get to it, let us know how it goes.

That brings to mind a safety demonstration I saw years ago at a large agricultural show, aimed at dissuading farmers from trying this sort of stunt to remove tree stumps.

They had a remotely controlled tractor attached to an immovable "tree stump" by a rope. The tractor started pulling, then after just a few seconds, the rear wheels of the tractor stopped turning and the whole tractor flipped over backwards at the same speed as the wheels were turning.

    Absolutely frightening !!

In light of this comment please don't do it...scratch that please install a roll bar.
  • I had this problem about a year ago - in the end the only way to sort it was to take a lump hammer and chisel to the concrete - it actually came apart quite quickly.

They had that at the demo, but it was mounted on the ground and caught the tractor as it passed through the vertical !!

My gardening lads sucessfully removed the stump of a post set in concrete for me two weeks ago.
Method: hammer, chisel, drill with large bit, effing, jeffing, cuppatea - repeat until job done!
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Much as I was going to suggest except if you also have a shovel dig out around the concrete which is prolly rotten if it's been there a long time, whack it hard with a lump or sledge hammer and it'll break up enough to remove it in pieces. Then you have a really nice big hole for the new concrete too!! There's little substitute for brute force and an awful lot of ignorance in these circumstances. :D
