contents insurance - tenant

Options
hi

recently moved into a flat which we are renting of somebody we know. There is no tenancy agreement (bit silly i know) but we really want to get contents insurance in case of a break in. Do we need a tenancy agreement to make our insurance valid? Don't want to get it then find out we can't claim if anything ever happens.

It wont affect the cover for your own items however insurance for tenants normally includes some liability cover for damages (non intentional) that you cause to the landlords property (eg floor coverings/ furniture etc depending on if it is furnished or unfurnished). Without a contract which states who is liable for what then this aspect of the cover most likely wouldnt be inforce

There is a tenancy agreement - you just don't have all the terms and conditions evidenced in writing - which can cause you and/or your landlord difficulties if there is any sort of problem down the line....
