Unexpected Expenses

So far so good; have been budgeting really well, keeping a spending diary and feeling really good about it... However next week is going to be a challenge and a half.
Tomorrow is my 3-year old daughters last swimming lesson of the term, and I completely forgot that they'll be expecting me to pay for next term: £30. She loves it and I consider it an important skill and really want her to continue.
Also this week her nursery school took the kids photos - £19 for the standard package... then yesterday they did this video, her sitting in santa's sleigh waving at the animals and things that they projected onto the blue background, it's soooo cute, but another £20 to order the DVD... why on earth could they not have spread this around a bit?!
I have a little kitty in Paypal from selling stuff on eBay, that I was saving for presents, but looks like I'll have to draw on it to pay for all this...

Do you really need a nursery photo & DVD? They're hideously overpriced at best. Why not wait until it she's at school (and you're in a better financial position) and just buy the photo's for the 'key' years - namely year 1 and 6.
Swimming lessons seem to be more of a priority right now.0 -
You do not have to purchase the photographs or video.
I worked in a school and was often embarrassed at the amount of money parents were asked to find, especially at this expensive time of year. I never turned a hair if photographs were returned unsold. If you NEED them, fine, but please don't feel pressurised. Some use the photos as Christmas gifts for family.
The school will make a handsome commission on the sales and it is a good way of boosting school funds for those that can comfortably afford it.
I would certainly try to fund the swimming lessons - they are invaluable.
Good luck0 -
the dvd is cute and lovely agreed but they are winning by the 'emotional strings' they are pulling to get you to buy it, if you have a camcorder or a friend has do a shoot yourself and save the money for the swimming lessons, xmas is coming and lots of photos will be taken, keep one, blow it up and have that as a special one or put it on the pc and have it as a screensaver, believe me you will watch the dvd so few times it is not worth it, make your own xxxx0

£20 for a DVD is way OTT, if I was you I would ask what the profits are going towards before deciding, I think producing a DVD like that should cost no more than £1 - £2One day I might be more organised...........

It's as cute as anything, but is only about 5 mins long if that!
The photos will be going out as christmas pressies to grandparents/great grandparents, in frames if I can pick up any cheap ones from Wilkies or something, so I don't mind paying for that. But the DVD is such a rip-off, pulling at the old heart-strings...Proud to be dealing with my debts:dance:

Hi
I'd say the swimming lessons are the priority. As for photos I've done what a pp said, bought them and used as pressies for grandparents etc, perfect with a cheapie frame from £ shop. Personally I wouldn't buy the dvd at £20 it's a rip off. Just my opinion.
