My partner is badly in debt so can't really help me.

I really don't get this. My husband is currently out of work and it has had a HUGE negative impact on our lifestyle. We lived to a certain standard, then had to scale back. It happens. However, I wouldn't see him go without. The couple of debts we do have will have to take a back seat so that priority debts, such as rent, council tax etc are paid. I pay for everything but always say 'we' - and I make sure he has a few quid in his pocket where possible. I would be horrified if he felt he had to get a high interest loan. We are a couple and support each other - my wages are his wages. He has done the same for me in the past.

    Thank you
He is trying to help, he's paying the rent, essential bills, food and council tax for both of us, which takes up all his income as he's only on minimum wage. Neither us are able to get any more help (overdraft increase, credit card, whatever) so the Provident loan is really a last resort.

I have also been Ebaying, so hopefully I will get something from that later this week :)

    So:

1.Have you applied for contribution based JSA - even if you do not get it you protect your NI contributions for the future.
    2. Has your OH applied for Workign Tax credits?
    3. Have you applied Council Tax benefit and Housing Benefit?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

How come your in so much debt when you were both working, so much debt that no one but doorstep lenders who charge ridicuous charges can help you?

Even if you were both on NMW there is only one set of rent, council tax etc. so their should be enough to live on.

No benefit takes debts into account and nor should they, have you spoken to your LA to see if you can get any help with your rent and ct?

Do you have PPI on any of the debts?

Once your on a even keel you should really try and save enough to pay the essential bills for a month a least, Martin suggests much longer but in todays I want it and I want it now society many people live for today only always thinking that they can pay the bills off later so that when they have even a small change in their cercumstances they cant afford to live.

You will get NI credits paid for you as long as you continue to sign on at the Jobcentre. If you sign off now it means you won't get these credits made BUT if you are unemployed still in 13 weeks time you can reclaim JSA and will be entitled based on your 08/09 and 09/10 NI contributions.

    Good luck with the jobsearch.

If your partner is only being paid minimum wage you may be entitled to some Local Housing allowance and council tax benefit as has been said.

Whilst you'rwe in this difficulty it might be worth while talking to one of the Debt Management Companies(the Free ones) there are some which don't expect you to pay for the services. You may feel frightened about doing this, but I would say in your circumstances the last thing you need is another debt.
My friend phoned the CCCS and she hasn't looked back since. They work out your priority payments Mortgage/Rent Community Tax Food Petrol and other things which are considered essentials. They then work out your income and whatever's left over is what you pay to your crditors it has given her incredible peace of mind and a weight's been lifted. They were'nt at all judgmental and if things improve you can review things. Not all lenders will agree to lowered payments but she hasn't had any problems with any of them.

    Good Luck
