balance transfer question (0% and normal)

Hi,

I think I have come to the end of the road with 0% balance transfers, I have about £6500 of credit card debt.

I recently applied for a virgin credit card and got a 4100 credit limit that ive used for a 0% balance transfer, but I cant seem to get another card for the remainder (ive been turned down by sainsburys and RBS, and have yet to hear from santander and creation but I get the feeling once your turned down by one its a sign your probably not gonna get approved for more, I have a credit score of 436 on equifax which is right in the middle of 'good' but I have alot of dormant cards).

So I had £2400 about to rack up interest on my halifax card so I transfered it to my egg card as that has a slightly better rate, but I get an email from the halifax every so often offering 0% balance transfers for 9 months, the last email said it needs to be done by the 31st march.

So my questions are:

Ive just transfered £2400 from halifax to egg, my statement is due on 7th april, the balance transfer deadline is 31st march which would be before my next statement so it wont have shown up as £0. So if I do the balance transfer will they recognise that the £2400 had been paid off and that the £2400 balance transfered back is charged at 0% (presumably if they charge me the 3% fee theyd have to recognise it as a 'new' balance). Is it worth waiting, are these deadlines false, are the likely to give me the same offer if I phone after the 31st

or secondly: I could just do normal non 0% balance transfers between egg and halifax which I think doesnt incur a fee, if I use one to pay of the balance in full of the other and keep bouncing them back and forth each month would this incur any costs? I guess it must do as that would be too easy

I know the best thing to do would be to just pay it off but I also have a career development loan at 13% which I am trying to pay off as soon as possible so I want to try and keep the credit card debt at 0% for as long as possible until I can deal with it

sorry about the long windedness of the question

  • yeah I think I will, ive read conflicting things though, from what ive read on this sites section it seems like I should, but i've also read that I should keep the ones I have had for the longest as it is good for my credit history and that cancelling credit cards can be a bad idea as it means my ratio of debt relative to the amount of credit available to me wouldnt look good to creditors
