  • "My "autoconfiguration IP" address showed as what the BT guy called a "peeper" IP address, 169.254.210.188, instead of the BT IP address, 192.168.1.64"..

The dhcp server is the hub/router.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • A 192.168.1.64 is a private IP address which means it's the IP which the adsl modem assigns to your PC and not the public IP address assigned to the modem.

What I would do in this situation is unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the PC or the modem, switch of the modem and switch it back on after a 10 second wait. I would then either reboot the PC or type at the command prompt...

    ipconfig /renew

Once renewed see if the DHCP server on the modem/router gave you a 192.168.x.x IP address. If so then all should work :)

Yes, you are right. For some reason I thought the OP had a USB modem rather than a router. If you have a modem router, the APIPA is from your local network. If you have a USB modem, the APIPA will be from your ISP's DHCP server.

Thanks for the advice everyone :)

Is anyone familiar with the BT Home Hub? Things are back to normal (ish). I've noticed that it sometimes "clicks" and seems to reset itself for no reason, the lights go off, then all flashing, then back on again one by one. Then I can reconnect.

It's done it a few times in the last few hours which is annoying, happens every day just about. Can anyone tell me why it does that?
  • What the guy ment to say was an APIPA address. This is kind of like DHCP(autoconfiguration ) for when there is no DHCP server.

Sounds like a hard reset. Does it coincide with anything else happening ? try phoning your landline while connected and make sure that you don't loose connectivity.

The resetting doesn't happen for any particular reason, I'm just idly surfing the Net.

I'll try my landline next time it does it, though.
