Contact Insurance company?

Hi Everyone

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on something. I accidently went into the back of a car in front of me in slow moving traffic. It wasnt a big impact but there was a very small dent on the car in front.

The driver said that they would be putting it through their insurance and we exchanged details.

I just need to know do i need to contact my own insurance company or do i just wait for their company to contact me?

Although they said they would put it through the insurance the damage was minimal so they may decide not to bother and i dont want to put this incident on record with my own company unnecesarily in case i am penalised at a latter date. At the same time if i am required to report this then i want to make sure i do.

Thanks very much for any help you can provide

Regardless of whether or not you might settle the cost of the third party repairs personally you still need to notify your insurers of the incident.

If you pay the TP repairs personally then they will not disallow any No Claims Bonus.

If you exchanged insurance details then chances are the third parties insurance co will write directly to your insurers to claim back their costs so unless you report it your insurance co will not be able to pay it for you.

If you are seriously thinking about paying back the costs then contact the third party insurers and ask them to send you the costs rather than writing to your insurance co which would be their first choice.

Thanks very much for the advice. I will not be paying for the damage myself but the damage was really minimal and that was why the person may not bother outting it through their insurance company.

Either way i will contact my insurance company as you suggested.

    Thanks again

Unless the person decides to claim for personal injury then you loose out and the second passenger makes some extra bucks,

As this was your fault the "innocent" third party doesn't need to use their own insurance to get the repairs paid for, as you/your insurer are responsible for paying.

This means the third party can claim directly off you (bypassing his own insurer).

However "minimal" the damage, when caused by someone else, most of us would be wanting it put right, knowing that all the costs will be borne by the "guilty" party!
