BT business line

harlo to all,

i got my current business land line from BT (3 months old), it cost me 40++ pound per quarter.

i receive a call today, he claim himself from BT sales team, he told me that BT will now reduce my rental to 20+ pound for every quarter, and also will reduce my calling cost. my phone (caller ID function) display "INTERNATIONAL" without any number to prove that he is from BT. he mention about my company name and phone number and also my address.

then he ask for my bank sort-code and acc number, he told me that the details are use for BT business customer and for the new price plan, etc etc "dont worry", "not giving credit card", he try to convience me, asking me what is my concern. i told him "i wont give you any bank details over the phone, please post something in black and white", he say "cannot... etc etc"

i ask him to call back some other time to let me think about it. can i give him my bank details in order to enjoy the discount?

please advice, thank you.

Next time he calls ask him for what department he's in, his managers name & his EIN. Every BT employee has an EIN & any on the phone would be able to give it without any problem to prove they're a BT employee

Sounds to me like it could well be the telephone version of phishing (trying to obtain your bank account details so it can be emptied).

I like the EIN advice (I've no idea what the letters stand for) but, as you've probably no idea either, let's assume he replies, "Business Incentives, my manager's Gordon Bloggs and my IEN is 86104G." Would you know if that's true or false?

Ask him again to put his offer - which appears too good to be true - in writing!

Ask him why his CLI shows 'Interenational'.

Ask him too for his direct dial telephone number - BT is a telephone company so, obviously, he'll will have no difficulty in providing such information.

In my experience of calls from BT, they normally display an 0800 number CLI which, when you call back, makes an announcement about BT having tried to contact you.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
