Need email converter help

I'm desparate to move from my old laptop -Vista 7/Windows Mail to my new laptop -Windows/Outlook. I could always resort to literally going through and emailing myself and send/receive on the new computer but that seems a bit silly. Surely someone else has run into this?? Is there a converter program available? Even if someone could PM with a recommendation, that would be brilliant. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

what email service is it? eg hotmail/gmail?
if you log onto the email via webmail do you see all your emails?

if you do all you need to do is add the email provider to outlook.

also what is the new OS? windows 7?

You don't need any "special" software, Outlook can manage it all on it's own.

Jamie, I use a POP3 via Orange and have always downloaded my emails into Windows Mail. This has been since 2008 and no copies of emails are left on the server. I have been able to export the emails but they save as eml files. Outlook takes pst. New system is Window 7.

Thanks KillerWatt! The problem I'm running into is when I go to Mail and "export messages to Microsoft Exchange" which then gives message "this will export Wimdows Mail to Microsoft Outlook" (EXACTLYwhat I want) I then get the following ... "The export could not be performed. An error occured while initializing MAPI". So basically I'm stopped.

I was able to export contacts successfully and have successfully migrated those into my new Outlook.

What is MAPI and why can't I initialize?????

only other way I can think of is create a free gmail account, then set it up using IMAP in windows mail on vista.

when that is set up you will see its mailbox (inbox, sent, ect.) along with your orange mailbox (inbox, sent, ect.),
then copy (use shift click to move more than one message at a time) all your emails from your orange account to the gmail one, so in your orange sent folder copy all those emails into gmails sent folder, then everything in the oranges' inbox copy into the gmail inbox.
(if you have any custom folders eg 'newsletters' ect. you need to create a lable in gmail and then copy those messages into that label)

after you have finished copying the emails all of them will be stored in the 'cloud' and all you have to do is set gmail up as IMAP in outlook and all you messages will be synced to your new computer.
(personally I wouldnt bother copying the emails back into the orange account)

I would then suggest you keep the gmail set up and any new message you get to the orange account copy it to the gmail one in the same way, this is a great backup tool as if your computer ever went kaput your emails would be safe and not lost forever.

I would also suggest you move away from the orange email as ISP email accounts can be pretty unreliable (eg if you left orange you may loose that email address), and pop is a pretty outdated way to get emails nowadays, IMAP is much better as it keeps your email synced on every device and the web.
(you can even set gmail to collect and send email from any pop email account including your orange one)
also gmails spam fighting systems are the best.
