  • "Foods labelled as 'suitable for diabetics'are overpriced and of no real benefit to people with diabetes, according to Diabetes UK and the Food Standards Agency. In a joint statement issued today the two organisations have called for an end to the use of terms such as 'diabetic' or 'suitable for diabetics' on food labels.

This is the advice from diabetes uk. My mum is diabetic and if i want to buy her chocolate I tend to buy really good dark chocolate from hotel chocolat as it has relatively little sugar. She hasn't tried their low sugar selection but to be honest I'd very surprised if it wasn't amazing because everything they do is lush.

I tend to do the same thing & they've always gone down well. The low sugar ones are just as yummy. They're all fantastic...& I have done extensive research... :o;):D

My mum is diabetic and in her 70's, and she likes both the chocolate and the toffees from Boots or Thorntons. If I were you, OP, I would get a selection of different things (small choc bars, packets of toffees etc rather than one box of chocs), maybe some diabetic shortbreads or something too, present them in a little basket or something so it looks nice.

That way, if some are nicer than others he will soon say which were his favourites, you can make a note for next time.

Now thats a good idea! Thanks.

I didnt realise there were shortbreads available too - I guess there is allsorts really!

The trouble with so-called 'diabetic' chocolates is that they tend to be sweetened with sorbitol which is a laxative.

While it's kind of you to think of your grandad and not allowing him to miss out, I'm sure he wouldn't thank you if he spends the rest of Christmas Day running to the loo!

My DH is an insulin-using diabetic and he does eat small amounts of ordinary chocolate. Small amounts, you notice - and also, it depends on how your grandad's diabetes is controlled. If it's controlled by insulin then he simply adjusts the amount of insulin he uses according to his blood-sugar results. If he's on dietary control then it's much more difficult.

In any case, I'd suggest small amounts of the better-quality chocolate which tends to have a higher cocoa content as opposed to sugar and fat.
