Tesco sent me new credit card because I didn't opt out

I have just received a new Tesco mastercard to replace my current Tesco Visa card which isn't due to expire until 2013. I didn't ask for the new card but apparently the info they sent me which I thought said I could opt into was actually for me to opt out of if I didn't want to change. When I rang, they said they had cancelled my Visa card from beginning of April and this couldn't be reversed. Am I being unreasonable in thinking it is odd that you are asked to opt out of receiving a new credit card rather than opting in?

It is part of the Ts & Cs of most cards that they can change the system (eg from Visa to Mastercard) if they wish. They can also withdraw the card completely by giving reasonable notice.
So all in all, by giving you the option to opt out of what they are entitled to do anyway, they have been quite reasonable, in my view.

    Why are you so annoyed?

  • I was quite happy with my current card and didn't want to change. I didn't read the info they sent me properly (I should have done) but thought it odd to have to opt out rather than opt in, particularly as they were offering some bonus clubcard points which as an incentive i thought was more to opt into. Will teach me to read the Ts & Cs better in future.

This is absolutely the right approach and one more people would do well to follow

Isn’t it a strange old world?
Tesco once used Natwest banking services before it decided to go it alone and start its own banking service.
As a customer of Natwest, they issued me with a Natwest Debit Mastercard.
Now at the same time that Tesco changed from a Visa Credit card to a Credit Mastercard, so Natwest has changed from a Debit Mastercard to a Debit Visa card.
Have they fallen out of love or something????

Haha :D does sound like the case.
Can I find out my credit score?
You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)

Don't Tesco still use NatWest as their clearing provider?

Well, they announced a while ago that they would start their own banking service, so I presume that is exactly what they have done.
They certainly now offer their own credt/club card, savings accounts, insurance etc. All under their own name.

Just posted this on the other thread. It would have been more useful here, so I'll c & p. Apologies for the double posting.

Boisey, I wonder which one of us they've given the correct info to? I was told today it could be reversed despite the fact I'd missed the deadline. If you decide to ring again & try to insist I'd be grateful if you'd let me know how you get on.

I don't know if this is the only thread, as this was the first one that came up earlier & I phoned Tesco immediately.

In case this is useful to anyone else, I have a Tesco Visa card held since March 1999. It arrived whilst I was out of the country in February, & untypically for me when i returned home at the beginning of March, I put off dealing with the matter for a month & have carried on using my old card.

Customer services told that my existing Visa card will stop working on 6th April (whew  ) After telling me I had nothing to lose & 650 points to gain, he said that if I really wanted to stick with my Visa card I could, & that a new card will have to be issued but with all the same terms & conditions. I told him I'd think about it for 24 hours.

I'll almost certainly stick with the re-issued VISA card & old conditions but want to do my research & make sure they don't pull another fast one. I totally agree that Mastercard is not as widely accepted. I use another card for travel, but had I been reliant on MC for my most recent trip I would've been up the proverbial creek.

Thanks all for your useful posts. I'll have a more careful read through before I ring Tesco again.
