Cavity Wall Insulation Mould

Hi

Last year I had cavity wall insulation done at my house (detached) last year.
Since then I have had black mould on the upstairs celings in the corners of the house.
The insulation people are now saying it is because I only have 100mm of insulation in the loft and there are cold spots. Is this right? Initially they surveyed the whole house prior to the wall insulation going in and said that the loft was fine.

Anyone had this? Needless to say the loft will need to be topped up at my expense and if that doesn't work they have said go back to them?

Thanks

if you only have 100mm in the loft then it is certainly not fine. The recommendation today is in the order of 270mm. So increasing the depth would be a good start.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Thanks for that Col

    ......and for my next question..........

where is the best place to get insulation at the best price??? Any recommendations other than Google? I am in Southampton

You need to look in the local big sheds for any special offers they may have going on. A point to bear in mind is that I bought my top-up insulation from Wickes a couple of years ago. It was fibreglass and it was enclosed in a thin plastic bag. This made it very easy to lay without getting severely irritated by the fibres.

We had this in one corner of our house. The loft insulation didn't go right to the corner and it was made worse by DD drying her hair in there and leaving wet towels lying around. So, when you do top up, it's worth making sure that you get it right into the corners. We also topped up twice and ended up with 450mm and were surprised that we could tell the difference, so if you find it on offer, get plenty.

  • Thanks brig. Do you think I will get away with topping the isulation up around the edges only? I have boarded right through the centre of the loft (not got round to the rest !)

Have you been up the loft to check the insulation covering in the corners??

It would certainly help to just go round the edges, and if you get it snug into the corners should solve your mould problem. If you want to reduce your bills though, I would do the whole lot. We kept a small boarded area in the middle where we "only" have 250mm - we did this by lifting the boards and fitting joists at right angles to the existing joists then re-laying the boards.
