Littlewoods and supposed cash winnings...

This is really winding me up, I have received today a letter from Littlewoods staing that I have won "an amount" of money (one value from the several printed in a box on the letter), I get this about once a month, and each time I just throw it away, but this one is a real exception...
I read through it, and lo-and -behold, in order to claim said winnings, I had to sign the claim form, which is infact an application for a *Credit* account with them, and in order for that to happen, they have to run a credit check, and if I failed, I would not receive the money they say I have won.
How in gods name can this be legal? As I can see, it's a scam to get people to sign up to their catalogue, to get people like myself stuck with a credit account and who cannot afford to pay for such things, regardless of if I "won" money with them, and also with a mark on my credit file which is sketchy at best!!!
I have sent them a very snotty e-mail with my opinion on this scam, aswell as a demand for them to remove me from any and all databases relating to their company, I will not tolerate being scammed into such things, especially when we're all feeling the pinch of hiked taxes, tighter credit regulation and less spare money.
Absolutely despicable...
