word processing program

Hi

I need to update my CV but I don't know what program to do it in!

I know it's a stupid question but I really don't know!!! I don't have Word but do have Microsoft Works. I have used the works processor before for things but people have said that they can't open the files that I email.

thanks

  • maybe your not saving them in the correct format for them to use.

this works just as good as word and can also open word files. http://www.openoffice.org/

You could try using https://www.emurse.com for your cv. It lays it out correctly, and you can download .doc .pdf and many more versions of your cv. Only trouble is, its quite americanised referring to resumes instead of cvs but I just download the .doc version and edit it to say CV in openoffice, posted above :)

If you save documents from any word processor as .RTF (Rich Text Format), then almost any word processor should be able to read them.

Only beware of including graphics or photos in the document, since they make .RTF files Very Large.

The alternative is to save it as a PDF - if you can!

It would help if you told us what file formnat your existing CV is in.
But generally speaking OpenOffice will do the job, and is fully compatible with MS Word-just change the default so that it saves in .doc or .rtf file format.
MS Works is not compatible with MS Word, nor is MS Word able to read default OpenOffice files.

    hi,

    thanks for your help.

I will go onto Openoffice now.

My current CV is saved as .doc as I did it in Word but the Word I used was only a temp one and it's locked me out of my cv :( so i've got to do a new one altogether.

No you haven't. It hasn't 'locked you out' of your Word docs, you just can't open them without the right program.
Download OpenOffice and they will open in that.

If you use Microsoft Works you have the option to SAVE AS... and choose the .doc format which will mean that Word will then be able to read the file.

SAVE AS can be found by dropping down the box under File in the menu across the top of the window.

Works won't allow you to save in .doc. If it did it would be used a a free alternative to Word, which would hardly benefit Microsoft.

thank you! I have just opened the word doc in open office - that's an evening saved!

If I save it can anyone open it in .odt which openoffice is defaulting to?

    thanks again everyone!

As already stated, save it in .rtf or .doc and anyone can open it in Word. If saved in .odt, only OpenOffice users will be able to open it.
If you change the default, the all new docs will be automatically saved in the file format that you specify.
