Don't think I'd want to use paraffin to get a fire going.

That's what fire lighters are made out of.
We don't take a newspaper, have masses of drier lint or go though enough toilet rolls (does anybody?) so just rely on good old paraffin wax fire lighters. One box lasts ages.
If you really get stuck, a cotton bud dipped in baby oil makes a good substitute. Fire lighters are cheaper though.0 -

A friend of mine used to run his central heating on plastic bottles that he picked up off the beach... and you are correct, it smelled horrendous and coated the flue in thick black, probably highly toxic, soot.0
