SailorSam has it about perfect I reckon.
I made a pretty decent one with a cloth soaked in meths then wrapped in lots of newspaper. leave a little cloth out one end to light.
I wasted a lot of meths as it was much bigger than needed... just for fun :p
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.

I seem to recall hearing about firelighters made with dryer lint/other flammable stuff and melted candle ends.

Also, don't some people dry out old teabags and soak them in something like meths?

instead of cardboard tubes you ca use the instructions on how to make your own pots (either in the Selfsufficientish bible or online) from newspaper and fill them with the damp mixture.

Newspaper, shredded paper, TD lint or citrus peel, loo roll inners all work well. Make sure that the newspaper is scrunched up loosely so air can get in and feed the flames. If using a stove, make sure that the ash bed isn't too thick, and the bottom vent is open even if burning wood.

Local papers seem to work better than nationals.
