Why spend lots of money on games when you can download free shooting games to play online!!
1) CrossFire - Only available on PC
Your typical point and shoot first person shooting game. You earn game points, experience and you can buy new guns, equipment etc using the game points.
There are many different missions that you can do including...
Free For All (You against each other)
Team Deathmatch
Ghost Mode (You can be either a futuristic semi-transparent ghost that's invisible with a knife, or a opaque soldier with full use of arms)
Mutation Mode - If you're mutated, you go around mutating others, if you're not, you have to avoid being mutated
Search and Destroy - If you're 'Black List', you have to plant a bomb, if you're 'Global Risk', you have to avoid the bomb being placed.
Escape Mode - bit like S&D, but instead of playing a bomb, you have to escape through a portal...
The graphics are relatively good and there are UK servers. There is never a shortage of people - although most people that do play are from the USA.
You can join clans, etc.
2) Phosophor - MAC And PC (it runs on Shockwave)
Very limited in it's maps and there are only four guns - a sniper rifle, machine gun, pulse gun and a rocket launcher. You can play against friends or robots.

Thanks for the post, will look at Crossfire.
I used to play the free Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory 5 years ago in Australia, back when it had a very active community and no shortage of servers. Tried it again months ago here in the UK, and was saddened how empty it was.
I bought a budget FPS Section 8 from Steam for just over a pound but there are only 1-2 servers to play on, and both are overseas.
I suppose I should get CS or CSS one day. I was always better at the Quake engine than the HL or Unreal engines though.0 -
for FPS I would strongly suggest Quake Live it browser based, runs on windows, Mac and Linux, has multiple game modes (FFA, CA, CTF), based on the quake engine, I cannot recommend QL enough.
if you want a free racing game then Need for Speed: World, is a MMO racing game and playes exactly the same as other NFS titles, (it runs on a micro transaction model but you can easily play the game without paying a penny)0 -
Crossfire is my personal favourite -there are 4 US servers, 4 UK servers and two rookie servers (and there are clan servers)...
The only problem is the number of hackers on there, which can get annoying. They keep patching it and are getting better at doing so.
Will have a look at Wolfenstein (must admit, I've never heard of it!)... Need for Speed:World sounds good too - I have been looking for a good racer. For a budget game, Game does 'Sold Out' games for like a fiver with some half decent games, albeit old!0 -
If you own any source engine game (or if not look out for one going for about £2 in the next steam sale) there are a few FREE source mods worth giving a try.
One of my favourite is:

Good thing there is most servers have vote kick / vote ban commands enabled so cheaters can generally be kept under control (so long as sufficient people playing know where their 'page up' / 'page down' button is to actually vote miscreants off)

Quakelive. Play Quake 3 in your web browser. Surprisingly good.0
