Problems closing Halifax account

in Credit cards
Hi
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how I can go about getting the Halifax to close my credit card account?
I had the Halifax credit card for many years and they kept putting the limit up until it got to a limit of £13,500, which is more than my annual salary, when I had the cleared the balance (I had used it for a low rate balance transfer) I decided to close it as it was so much available credit I thought it might harm my credit rating.
About 10 months ago I phoned them up to cancel the card, I thought it was all sorted but a month later I got a statement, so then I wrote to them asking them to close the account, the next month I got another statement, so I wrote to them again pleading with them to close the account and I did not hear anything from them again so I assumed it was closed, ( in hindsight I should have asked them to send me written confirmation that the account was closed)
Anyway, after about 7 or 8 months later out of the blue I get a statement from them for that account (77p in credit) Does anyone know who I need to contact to ensure the account gets closed?
I'm not sure if this is just a coincidence but about a month ago I applied for a Halifax credit card for the 10 month 0% on purchases (I thought at the time I did not have any Halifax Credit cards so it would be OK to apply) I did actually get the card I applied for and have since used it to purchase the item I wanted, probably totally unrelated to my getting a statement for my old account, but it does seem strange.
Thanks for reading,
Julie

Telephone them on 08457 283848 or write to them at the letter on the statement, explain you want it closing and it want confirmation in writing.
Regarding the 77p you can request them to send it to your bank account you will need to give them your details or you can ask them to donate it to charity.
The credit limit increases - you can request that they do not increase your credit limit when they feel free, just ask them. In future they will only look at credit increases when you contact them.
Hope this helps.0 -
Ask them to send you the credit and then close the account. It was probably closed the first time but reactivated by the credit. Check your report afterwards to see that it is closed.
Nothing to so wih your other card application.0 -

It could be worth phoning them as the advisor should be able to close the account immediately.0 -
Thanks for the replies, I'll try contacting them again0

you keep getting statements as the account is in credit. On the statement at the top if there is a "VX" beside the account number then it is closed. As others have said, call them up to get the credit back or give to charity etc..Regards, Robin.2011 MFW # 34

Thanks for the information, there is a VX next to the account number, I have asked them to donate the credit to charity so hopefully it will all be sorted now
