Vegetarian option for a hog roast?

Just wanted to say thanks to Debbie for asking a question I wanted to ask, and everyone else for your suggestions! We're thinking of doing something like sausage and bacon sarnies for the evening do, and were wondering what to provide for the veggies without going down the 'fake meat' road! Lots of ideas now
Cheese and biscuits would be lovely too, as long as there were hot veggie things too - it's something that everyone can share, as well as having separate 'veggie food' and 'meaty food'.
See you on the Sep 2012 thread soon Debbie! :hello:

Not sure i'd offer "grub"...it might be a little chewy!
I was thinking more along the lines of this

but if you prefer grub thats fine....
Grubs as opposed to "grub" are not vegetarian, but then again neither is some of the cheese in that picture. You do know what rennet is don't you?The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

I would go for falafel, salad and tzatziki (greek yoghurt, garlic, mint and cucumber) or hummus in a pitta or wrap rather than a bun, but if buns are the only option, it should still work ok. Not all vegetarians can eat roasted vegetables (peppers are very hard to digest), and to be honest ratatouille or roasted mediterranean vegetables are a bit cliched.Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170

These ideas are brilliant and I definitely second the cheese/veg one as a veggie myself.First baby due 3/3/14 - Team Yellow! Our little girl born 25/2/140

I love falafel or hoummus with salad. This would even be suitable for vegans, so covers all bases. Personally I wouldn't be bothered by not having hot food though I suppose some people might be.0

Felafels, salad, potato salad etc. However, I wouldn't want a hog roast company putting it into a bun for me! All that pig juice on their utensils...hands...aprons - nice!If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

We went my besties wedding last year , she also had a hog roast but the hog roast company provided the most divine wild mushroom pasta for the non meat eaters. To be honest I love a bit of pork but I ate more of the pasta and the kids loved it.ONE HOUSE , DS+ DD Missymoo Living a day at a time and getting through this mess you have created. One day life will have no choice but to be nice to me :rotfl:0

Thanks for all the replies - some great ideas! I must admit I was a bit worried about the hog roast company serving it as well - but she said there is salad and stuff that goes in the bun first and the person that does that then passes to the the 'meaty' person - so the first server will serve the veggie stuff. I think that should be acceptable to most people. I liked the mushroom idea as this will be easy to portion control, but then took on board the comment that if you also hate mushrooms it won't be very nice!
We are going to try out the ideas over the next few months and I will see what I can come up with. We are also having a fork buffet for the reception - this will be a choice of chicken, salmon or roasted vegetable and feta tartlet, with jacket potatoes and various salads, so there will probably be stuff left over from the afternoon which we will put out as well!
Thanks again everyone!0 -
I would just like to say thank you to Debbiecatal for considering her non meat eating guests - very kind of you and I hope you have a great day when it comes. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

This is an option we are also having to take into consideration! We only have 3 veggies coming to our wedding (they will be there all day) and we are having a hog roast in the evening. I need to contact the venue about what the options will be. We havent chosen our wedding breakfast either yet, so that needs to be taken into consideration too! I know they love veggie sausages as thats what they always have at BBQs, so I might ask them if they want hot dogs in the evening, or what they would like as an alternative!Married the absolute love of my life on Sunday May 6th and I couldnt be happier!!!0
