what can my mate do?

Hi, My mate has a cheque which is crossed 'account payee only' he can't put it in his old bank is in bad areas for 3 -4 years, cos of bad credit he can't open another bank account, he doesn't wanna send it back cos it will take a few months to get it changed and he needs the money asap! please advise what to do?

    Has he tried opening a 'Basic Bank' account?

    yes with halifax and they declined him due to a credit check!!

    Thank you I have read through that document and found it very useful!! He had gone into Halifax and asked for a basic bank account and reckons the bloke tried him for a current account and said that he couldn't do anymore!!

  • try the cooperative bank, they have a pretty good basic account that does`nt need too high of a credit score
  • He could take it to somewhere like The Money Shop. They cash "account payee only " cheques and take a percentage of the cheque as a fee. I think he needs to take ID with him, something like a passport, I have never done this but someone on the forum might be able to give you a bit more detail.
  • Your friend can open a saving account (preferably one with a passbook).
    Cheques can be paid into most (if not all) saving accounts.
