Hey
I have two questions.

Firstly about a site:

megasalesonline.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=471

the price seems a little good to be true

They do have some info on facebook

They are registered

UK GIFT STORE LIMITED
29TH FLOOR
ONE CANADA SQUARE
CANARY WHARF
LONDON
UNITED KINGDOM
E14 5DY
Company No. 07422302

Is this site likely to be legit? What risks do I face by buying this product if it isn't?

Would it be worth my while taking this offer at face value? If it is fake what risks do I face?

Secondly about brand:

I have been looking for a new sat nav.

I want a big screen, good features, european maps, pedestrian nav, free traffic updates (if these work well in Northern Ireland??), lane guidance, and good search facilities with up to date maps.

bluetooth would also be good, my car has it, but I do drive cars without it.

I was looking at a garmin 1490 TV, I have to kill a fair bit of time in my car on a daily basis between waiting on people with work and as a scout leader we always end up having to kill time in cold weather with a couple of leader in a car. Also in the summer when we go away the guys all like the football and rugby so I figured they could catch the highlights at the end of the news etc.

Does anyone have experience of this model?

Or have any tips on Garmin vs. tom tom, especially on software updates, map reliability etc

If you put the first line of the address into google..

    29th Floor One Canada Square

..you will find many many hits so this is just an accommodation address and there is nobody there.

There is no VAT number mentioned anywhere on the site.

A new poster giving a URL in their first pst is usually a :spam:

Legitimate sites don't need to resort to :spam:

None of this is conclusive proof of a scam but I'm calling :spam: anyway and have reported the post.

Even if it's not spam, here's a convincing reason not to use that website to buy anything:

Only incorporated on 28th October 2010, so no accounts to go on.

The only director, Saqib Hameed, has no other directorships, is aged 27 and has an office in One Canada Square?

I'll stay well clear thanks :rotfl:
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard
  • Yes, clearly spam....

Anyway Thanks, last time I check out internet shopping sites at 2am... I swear ;) :A

I wasn't sure how much this unit is worth exactly as I hadn't done an extensive search. Looking around now it's hardly cheap. Anywhere. It is a nice one though.

I was very unlikely to have purchased from the site anyway. My gadgets tend to misbehave themselves so I like having proper ways of dealing with them.

The address is real enough, however I did think it was a predictable place for someone who's never been into the uk to use. With the correct search terms it should return a specific address at least, but it does look very shady indeed.

One of those things, pretty sure it was fake, just thought I would ask seeing as the old faithful, Google, had nothing.

Any idea about benefits of each system?

I have outlined what I'm looking for and just want something that works well with no subscriptions, cheap maps, etc.

I am asking on here because I want the opinion of a user that may have factored that in or realised the differences in use. :)

Any help would be most welcome.

On the satnav front, the unit will do pretty much all you need it to. I've tried TomTom, Garmin and Navman in the past and was only really disappointed with the Navman.

IMO, TomTom and Garmin are pretty similar for software and map updates (I don't bother with the latter, planning to replace the whole unit every 4-5 years instead) - TomTom spoken instructions are (to me) slightly better timed, but Garmin Customer Service is, in my experience, much, much better than TomTom.

As a TV, I'd have to say that a 4.4 inch wide TV in a car would for me be near useless. It's just too small to be able to use at any distance.
  • I unfortunately just bought that 1490tv sat nav from mega sales online. and as you have said it is a scam. I've rang the number supplied and you just speak to a receptionist for the whole building. Who I have to say is the most unhelpful person you'll meet, all I got from her was nobody is answering the phone. She wouldn't check the office or give me an alternative number to contact them by all she said was to keep ringing up. It is just so frustrating that Canada house who are supplying these people with an office just aren't bothered about what these people are doing. Has anyone got any suggestions on what I can do?
  • I have two navs - Garmin 2350LT and NoName cheap Chinese nav (with IGO 8.3). The only thing I can recommend you is Garmin- widescreen display,Lane assist (with junction view) ,FM traffic receiver - everythin that you need when your are on the road.Map coverage is excellent(fron london to Marseille(FR) without any problem or turnig back to search the right way)
  • This is a fraudulent site . I ordered a stereo on it as the price was only £10 less than others I've seen so didn't look too good to be true . As you can guess the stereo never came and all e-mails have been ignored . Please pass this on to as many people you can and we'll try to bring this site to heal !!!.
  • I had the misfortune to order and pay for a TV from megasalesonline at the beginning of May. I have just managed to recover my money. When paying online always pay by credit card ideally Barclaycard as you are insured for any loss and the staff are always helpful. When I purchased the tv, the site used sagepay as the means of payment transaction. First of all I contacted my credit card company who started the ball rolling, I then contacted sagepay who to their credit contacted megasales requesting that they contact me to resolve the issue. A day later sagepay and I received a reply saying that the refund has been processsed. Two days later the money was credited to my account.

On no accounts should anyone deal with megasalesonline.com also known as UK Gift Stores Ltd. Firstly I doubt you will receive yoour order, secondly they are nearly impossible to contact and when you do they are rude, and thirdly you may lose your hard earned money.

PLEASE TELL EVERYONE TO AVOID THIS RETAIL SITE AS IT WILL ONLY BRING A LOT A GRIEF.
