How to set Security on Wireless Router

Options
I have a Billion VoIP/802.11g ADSL2+ Firewall Router which I use in conjunction with Freedom2Surf.

In easy 'Janet & John' terms how do I set the security so that I prevent unknown users from using my wireless LAN connection?

I've got access to the router settings via IE but just can't work out where I make the setting!!
It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!

check out the WEP, WPA menu settings, or if your not actually using the wireless part, turn it off all together

    regards

  • Under Wireless Security, Security Mode is set to 'Disable' in a drop-down box. The other options are 'WEP' or 'WPA Pre Shared Key'.

If I select 'WEP' WEP Authentication is shown as 'Open System' (in a drop-down box) and WEP Encryption is shown as 'WEP64' selected 'WEP128' de-selected and HEX and ASCII in a drop-down. There is also an empty box for a 'Pass Phrase'.

Do I have to enter something in the 'Pass Phrase' box and leave 'Open System', 'WEP64' and HEX as being selected?

Told you it was 'Janet & John' instructions needed!!!!

I'd go with WPA unless you have a device that needs WEP. WPA is a better system.

Also look at enabling MAC address Filtering. Each network card, device has a unique MAC address you can configure your router to only allow connections from pre configured MAC addresses.

You will need to get the MAC addresses from your devices to type into the list.

def go with wpa it' stronger than wep. Have a look at https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm the passwords it generates are too long to remember (a good thing) so u might need a memory key.

Other things you can look into are:
as Cypher said - mac address filtering (not fool proof it can be faked, but it all adds up)

disable ssid broadcast (I've never got this working nicely, so i'll stick my head in the sand and say other things make me adequately secure)

use static ip addresses instead of dynamic ones (don't start at an obvious number i.e. use 192.168.103 instead of 192.168.2) doing this means that if some scamp can get past other barriers they won't have an ip address

oh, to get your mac address (if your router doesn't tell you):

    start -> run
    type cmd
    type ipconfig /all
physical address is the mac address

also don't forget to change your routers username and password if you can and make sure that your ssid cannot identify you.
