Why are people paying £50 for an MOT?

I suppose it could be depend where you are but in my area many places offer them for £25, £29.99 and £35. This includes small indies.

I've just paid £25 for mine (a ford) at a main peugeot dealer. Passed fine, no phantom problems found. Before this test I've been using a small mot garage for the last 3-4 years, charging £35 and have had 1 fail (coil spring)

I pay £50 for mine, because that's what he charges.
He's good, he fails it for the important things, I always get to walk under the car, he always points out anything that needs doing.
One of them failed last time, he wouldn't quote me for the work, told me to do it myself, they'd be too dear with the time involved.

A decent independent should be able to do both for around the £150 mark, and this would include a full service as per Flying High's comment (although you may not get the fuel/pollen filters for that money, best to check).

All genuine GM parts, even the oil
(Use GM oil in everything, semi synthetic, about £10 per 5l)

    MOT £50
    Oil £10
    Air Filter £8
    Fuel filter £8
    Oil filter £2
    Pollen filter £8
    Plugs £10

That's £96 gone, if you'll do the rest for £24, I think even I would let you.

MOT & the filters are the expensive bits there... Have a look for Pentagon on ebay if your after VX bits... They're a VX dealer do genuine VX bits well under the trade club price;)

And Hammyman:rotfl: Is that really what I'm making?:rotfl:

As as Former drag racing mechanic whos done it all... who I've sure I've read takes his car to national IRC for an Oil change?... And to the Dealers for the Boost pipe was it? you'll be pleased to know I remove each wheel to fit every spark plug:D

I took my car to just mot's http://www.justmots.eu/?gclid=CLWr3v-x5KcCFdFX4Qodij5x9g and paid £35 but you can get it cheaper if you book 90 days in advance. It failed on one thing so I then took it to my local independent garage and asked him to service the car and sort out the failure and then rebooked the test days later. All done for about £150. Will do this again next year as well.

    Hi

Is the service you have at £150 parts and labour, or only labour

As I got quotes from some garages at £150 but only labour of checking things and they add on costs of parts, i.e. spark plugs, filters etc seperatley so you going to end up with a big bill.

How do garages carry out a service is it labour only your paying for with additional costs arising from parts i.e spark plugs etc?

Having looked on kwick fit they include everything, so one would be tempted to go there. But then there are all the horror story's I've heard about them.

Mostly Filters and plugs they seem to have listed... Pentagon- Vauxhall.

But theres others on ebay selling cheap genuine bits if its genuine your after.... searching for the part numbers works better I find as it sorts the genuine from the crap.

I've got my 6 year old Focus booked in with the main dealer (full service history with them) and they are doing the service and MOT for £146.
This is, just a service though. With a full major service it rises to £176.
Tried to ask what the difference between a service, and a full major service was, but it was like trying to knit fog.
However, they've serviced my car from new, and being disabled (no, I've no Motobility car) I've only done just over 11k miles in 6 years.
